Inspired by the Black cowboys who revolutionized rodeo competitions in the 1800s and 1900s, the “Rodeo” Dunks feature intricate details that reflect this legacy. The design includes a “Tourmaline” suede upper, “Monarch” leather piping, Western stitching on the heel, and lasso-inspired “Nike” text on the backtab. The inner tongue bears the message “Made For The Modern Cowboy,” while the outer tags showcase brown leather and red stitching. Additionally, the sneakers come with a yellow satin sock liner, red outsoles, and rope laces for an authentic rodeo feel. To top it off, a yellow bandana with a cowboy illustration is also included.
To fully appreciate the significance of the “Rodeo” Dunks, it’s important to understand the history behind them. Black cowboys like Bill Picket, credited with inventing bulldogging, played a crucial role in shaping rodeo as we know it today. The design of the sneakers is inspired by the poster of the silent western movie “The Bull-Dogger (1922),” starring Picket. Nike SB even visited the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo in Memphis, Tennessee, to honor this heritage.
